This year in the group stage of the UEFA Champions league there were lots of new records set, some good, and (looking at you Rangers) some bad. But before we get to the records, Soccer Alarm will share the results of the Champions League Round of 16 draw.

Fastest Champions League hat trick: Mohamed Salah
In Liverpool’s 7-1 demolition of Rangers on October 12th, Mohamed Salah came in as a substitute, and quickly took apart the Ranger’s defense, scoring in the 75th minute, then the 80th minute, and lastly in the 81st. Salah netted these three over the course of six minutes and twelve seconds, beating the previous record of 8 minutes by Bafetimbi Gomis for Lyon with time to spare.
Worst Champions League group stage performance: Rangers
The Scottish team Rangers qualified for the UEFA Champions League after losing the Europa League finals last year. They could have taken this opportunity and made it to the knockout stages, but the team had a tough group, with Liverpool, Napoli, and Ajax. The team didn’t look themselves and they lost every single one of their games. This has happened before to other clubs, but no team has ever had a goal differential worse than -19, until the 2022/2023 Rangers, who lost their group with a goal differential of -20.
Longest unbeaten run in the Champions League group stage: Bayern Munich
Starting in the 2017 Champions League group stage with 3-0 win over Celtic, Bayern Munich have not lost a match in the group stage. This comes with the German side winning 6 out of their 6 games against Inter Milan, FC Barcelona, and Viktoria Plzen. The previous record was set by Real Madrid from 2012-2017 with 30 games, but Bayern have smashed that record with 34 straight undefeated games, with 31 wins and 3 draws.
Oldest player to score twice and assist twice in a game: Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi, one of the greatest players of all time, added another record to his collection this Champions League season. In a 7-2 win over the Israeli side Maccabi Haifa, Messi became the oldest person to score twice and assist twice in a Champions League game, beating Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 30 years, Messi did this at the age of 35 years old, an incredible feat for the Argentine.
Most Champions League wins for a manger: Carlo Ancelotti
Over his years of coaching, Carlo Ancelotti has led many different teams to glory, and has had many wins on the European stage. But now, with Real Madrid, Ancelotti has achieved the record of the most wins in the UEFA Champions League, with 104, one more than the famous retired Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson. He achieved this with Real Madrid after a 5-1 win over Celtic, and Ancelotti said that he believes that he can make it to 200 wins.
