Today Soccer Alarm will analyze the national team from each continent (Excluding Antarctica of course) most likely to win the World Cup trophy this year in Qatar.
South America: Brazil
Brazil are favorites to win the competition and add another World Cup trophy to their collection, already the largest in the world. The Brazilian team is also the number 1 ranked team on the FIFA World Rankings.
Africa: Senegal
Senegal have recently won AFCON, proving that they are the best team in Africa. The team led by Chelsea goalkeeper Édouard Mendy and Bayern Munich winger Sadio Mané are the highest ranked African side on the
FIFA World Rankings at number 18.
Oceania: Australia
Although Australia competes in Asia for World Cup Qualifying and other competitions, they are located in Oceania and are the only team in Oceania to qualify, thus winning this spot by default. Even so they are a strong team who are expected to get knocked out in the group stage, but perhaps they could pull a couple of upsets, like when they beat Peru on penalties to qualify for the World Cup.
Asia: Japan
Asia was close between Japan and South Korea, but Japan edged them out because Japan came runner up in the AFC Asian Cup, while South Korea were knocked out in the Quarter Finals. Japan also won the last game between the two sides. Japan have a tough group, which includes favorites Spain and Germany, but Japan may just strong enough to make it out of the group and into the Knockout Stages.
North America: Mexico
Mexico finished second in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (Where the top 3 teams automatically qualify) tying first place Canada on points but losing to them in goal differential. Mexico are also the highest ranked North American team on the FIFA World Rankings at number 12.
Europe: England/France
Europe was too close to call, so it goes to a tie between France and England. England were runners up in the UEFA Euros last summer and France won the UEFA Nations League in the Fall and of course, the 2018 World Cup. While France is higher in the World Rankings (Number 4), England is only one behind at number 5. Both teams have strong players such as Mbappe for France and Kane and Sterling for England.
