Writer's picture: EthanEthan

With the World Cup having started and some surprising and interesting games having already occured, we have to talk about the golden boot, this is the award given to the top scorer of the World Cup and their are some players that are ready to win it. Here are the ten who are most likely to be the top scorer.

10. Romelu Lukaku- Belgium

The Belgian striker would be much higher on this list if he was fit for the whole tournament. The Inter Milan player is out for the first two games of the World Cup because of injury, but this may not stop him from winning the golden boot, as his shots are some of the best in the world, which has been proven at his stint at Inter Milan after an embarrassing season at Chelsea, where he scored very little goals.

9. Vinicius Junior- Brazil

The only thing that could get better this year in soccer for Vinicius Junior is if he wins the golden boot. The Real Madrid player has already won La Liga and scored the only goal in a 1-0 win in the Champions League final against Liverpool, but this prolific scorer could only cap the year off with a World Cup win or the golden boot.

8. Memphis Depay- Netherlands

The Netherlands have an easy group, and Memphis Depay, the leader of their attack, should be able to score lots of goals in the group stage, and as the Dutch inevitably progress into the later rounds. This won’t be helped by the fact that Depay hasn’t played in 2 months because of an injury.

7. Gabriel Jesus- Brazil

Brazil’s starting striker who had an amazing start to the 2022/2023 season while playing with Arsenal cannot be counted out of the golden boot race, as Brazil is certain to go far in the tournament and he is their number 9. Jesus has many world class players who will be setting him up with chances in a relatively easy group stage for Brazil, where he can rack up goals before the group stage even starts.

6. Cristiano Ronaldo- Portugal

Ronaldo is aging and in a very difficult group, but with his abundance of skill, he may be able to guide Portugal late into the tournament, scoring throughout. Ronaldo’s ability to play well with players on his team is being questioned at Manchester United and even on Portugal, but as long as they can put their difficulties aside, Portugal will be able to score lots of goals, especially with Ronaldo up front.

5. Neymar- Brazil

Neymar is one of the most talented attacking players in recent history, and he is now playing with a Brazil team who are expected to win the tournament. With Neymar being Brazil’s 2nd all time leading goalscorer, he has a huge chance of being the leading scorer in the tournament. Also, if Neymar can score three or more goals this tournament, then he will become Brazil’s all time leading goals scorer, beating Pele’s record of 77 goals.

4. Lautaro Martinez- Argentina

In an amazing Argentina team who are a favorite to win the tournament, Lautaro Martinez plays striker. He might be the breakout star of the world cup, as he is surrounded by world class talent on the pitch and he has some of his own. Martinez is the 3rd top goalscorer in the Serie A with his team, Inter Milan and he (along with the next player on this list) is supposed to be the focus of the Argentine attack.

3. Lionel Messi- Argentina

Messi, one of the greatest players of all time, has his chance to win the golden boot because he is playing for probably the best Argentina team in the recent years of the Messi era. Lionel Messi, a prolific scorer, says that Qatar will be his last World Cup, which will give the player who is in great form for club and country, even more initiative to win

2. Kylian Mbappe- France

Mbappe plays for the very offensive France, known for their attacking style. Mbappe spearheads this, as he is one of the best attackers in the world despite being only 23 years old. This has shown at his club PSG, where he has the most goals of any player in Ligue 1 this season, and he is tied for first place with Mohamed Salah for the most goals so far in the 2022/2023 season of the UEFA Champions League.

1. Harry Kane- England

The pick between Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe for the number one spot was a difficult decision, but the 2018 winner of the Golden Boot came out on top. England’s striker not only takes the penalties for his nation like many others on this list, but he has also been in great form recently. The Tottenham player holds the 2nd place spot on the Premier League’s list of top goalscorers this season, with 12 in 15 games.
